Tage Thompson is a professional ice hockey player from the United States, currently playing for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 30, 1997, Thompson is the son of Brent Thompson, a former NHL defenseman and current head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. His parents’ genes dictated his future, and by the time he was a teenager, Thompson started playing ice hockey. His talent was soon recognized, and he played among the top youth leagues in the United States.
In 2014, Thompson became a part of the United States Hockey League, playing for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. He won the RBC Cup with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede in 2015, scoring 20 goals in the regular season. The following year, he led Connecticut to its first-ever Hockey East championship, with three goals in three tournament games. His performance with the Huskies earned him a chance to play for the United States at the 2017 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he scored two goals and an assist in seven games. That same year, the St. Louis Blues drafted him as their first-round pick, 26th overall, in the NHL entry draft.
Thompson played his first NHL game on October 5, 2017, for the Blues, making him one of seven first-round picks to play in the NHL that season. However, he struggled to find regular ice time, bouncing back and forth between the NHL and the Blues’ AHL affiliate in San Antonio, Texas. In 2019, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres along with two draft picks in exchange for Ryan O’Reilly. Since joining the Sabres, Thompson has performed well, playing in 65 games for the team over two seasons (2019-21), scoring seven goals and 10 points. He currently remains a promising young talent in the NHL and is expected to feature in the future.
