Vitek Vanecek is a Czech professional ice hockey goaltender who currently plays for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL). Vanecek was born on Jan 9, 1996, in Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic, and began his hockey career playing in the Czech Republic League for teams like HC Benatky nad Jizerou and HC Strakonice 2000. Vanecek was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in the second round, 39th overall. After playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Hershey Bears for several years, Vanecek was called up to the NHL in 2020 when Ilya Samsonov got injured. He made his NHL debut against the Buffalo Sabres and helped the Capitals win with a spectacular save in overtime.
