Wade Redden is a former professional ice hockey player hailing from Canada. Born on June 12th, 1977, Redden began his hockey career at a young age in the Western Hockey League. He played for the Brandon Wheat Kings for four seasons, earning the WHL's Defenseman of the Year award in 1995. Following his successful junior hockey career, Redden was selected second overall by the New York Islanders in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.
Redden played 23 seasons in the NHL, suiting up for teams such as the Islanders, Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins. He established himself as a reliable defenseman, capable of contributing offensively, and routinely logging heavy minutes. Redden's most successful years were spent with the Ottawa Senators, with whom he reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007. He was also a two-time NHL All-Star and played in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey for Team Canada. Redden retired from professional hockey in 2016, officially ending a career that spanned over two decades.
Despite his success on the ice, Redden had to overcome personal struggles during his career. In 2007, he revealed that he had been suffering from depression for years, which had led to him contemplating suicide. However, he sought help and became an advocate for mental health, speaking openly about his experiences and encouraging others to seek support. Over the years, Redden has used his platform as a former professional athlete and advocate for mental health to help others who may be struggling with similar issues.
