Wayne Thomas was a professional ice hockey goaltender born on April 22, 1953, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He began his career playing for the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) before signing with the Montreal Canadiens organization in 1973. Despite being the third string goaltender for the Canadiens, he won two Stanley Cup championships with them in 1973 and 1976. In 1978, Wayne Thomas was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he played for five seasons, earning the team's nod in the 1980 NHL All-Star Game.
Wayne Thomas's career statistics were impressive, with 165 wins, 123 losses, and 46 ties in between 1973-1984. He was also recognized with various awards such as the AHL First All-Star Team (1974) and was named the Canadian Major Junior Goaltender of the Year (1972) and the Terry Sawchuk Trophy Recipient (1974). Hockey fans remembered Thomas for his unique playing style that often involved blocking shots while standing up, a tactic that would become a popular technique for many goalies later.
