Girgensons' hockey career began in his homeland where he played for HK Riga in the Belarusian Extraleague. He then moved to Dubuque Fighting Saints in the United States to play in the United States Hockey League (USHL). In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Girgensons was selected 14th overall by the Buffalo Sabres.

Since joining the Sabres, Girgensons has established himself as a reliable two-way forward. His hard-working style regularly sees him play key roles on both the power play and penalty kill. In the 2014-15 season, Girgensons recorded a career-high 30 points with 15 goals and 15 assists. For his impressive performance that season, he was voted to represent the Sabres in the NHL All-Star Game, where he received the most votes of any player in league history. Girgensons' dedication and commitment to his team make him an essential part of the Sabres' lineup, and he continues to be a valued member of the organization.
