He was a star athlete at the University of Southern California (USC), where he played both football and track and field. Carmichael made his mark in NFL history during the 1956 season when he set an NFL record with a 106-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Chicago Bears. It was the longest touchdown return in NFL history at the time, and it stood as a record for over four decades until it was broken in 2007. During his six seasons with the Packers, Carmichael established himself as one of the league's top return men, making the Pro Bowl in 1955 and 1956. He retired from the NFL in 1958 with 1,451 yards on 59 kickoff returns and 865 yards on 125 punt returns.
After his football career, Carmichael worked as an advertising executive and served on the board of the NFL Alumni Association. He was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1974. Carmichael passed away on November 23, 2016, at the age of 88.
