Alex Vraciu Autographs

Alex Vraciu was a highly decorated American naval aviator, born on November 2, 1918, in East Chicago, Indiana. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and was commissioned as an Ensign. Vraciu's career spanned 27 years, during which he became one of the most successful fighter pilots in U.S. Navy history. He flew the Grumman F6F Hellcat and was credited with downing 19 Japanese aircraft, making him the sixth highest-scoring American ace of World War II.
Vraciu's most significant action in World War II came on June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, also known as the "Marianas Turkey Shoot." Vraciu led a flight of eight F6F Hellcats that intercepted a formation of 40 Japanese aircraft. Vraciu personally shot down six of the enemy planes, while his wingman took down two more. The U.S. Navy pilots destroyed a total of 17 Japanese planes in the engagement, and Vraciu's skill and bravery were praised by his superiors.
After World War II, Vraciu continued to serve in the Navy, flying in the Korean War and serving as a flight instructor. He retired from the Navy in 1963 with the rank of Commander. In recognition of his service, Vraciu was awarded numerous medals, including the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal. Alex Vraciu passed away on January 29, 2015, at the age of 96, but his legacy as one of America's greatest fighter pilots will always be remembered.
