Jackson deployed to the Pacific theater in 1943, where he served as a corporal in the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment. He saw action in several significant battles, including the Battle of Guam and the Battle of Iwo Jima. It was during the latter battle that he performed a heroic act for which he would receive the Medal of Honor - the US's highest military honor. He single-handedly destroyed 12 enemy bunkers and killed numerous Japanese soldiers while under heavy fire. Despite being wounded in the process, Jackson continued to fight until he collapsed from exhaustion. His valorous actions on Iwo Jima earned him the Medal of Honor in 1945, and he was subsequently promoted to sergeant.

After the war, Jackson returned to Kansas City, where he worked for the Veterans Administration for many years. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 99, having left behind a legacy of courage and dedication to his country. His bravery on Iwo Jima remains an inspiration to future generations of Marines and other servicemen and women.
