Carl Muscarello Autographs
Carl Muscarello, also known as "The Kissing Sailor," was born in 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the man who famously kissed a stranger in Times Square at the end of World War II, after hearing the news that the Japanese had surrendered. The iconic photograph, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, was published in Life magazine, and is still one of the most recognized images of all time.
After WWII, Muscarello continued his service in the US Navy for another 20 years, ultimately reaching the rank of Chief Quartermaster. During his military career, he served on numerous ships and stations, including a stint on the USS Missouri, which is famous for being the site of the Japanese surrender ceremony. Muscarello was present at the ceremony, and even managed to sneak a few photos of the event.
After his retirement from the Navy, Muscarello became involved in veterans' organizations and worked as a civil servant. He continued to make public appearances and give interviews throughout his life, sharing his memories of the war and of that famous kiss in Times Square. Carl Muscarello passed away in 2015 at the age of 89, but his legacy as the Kissing Sailor lives on as a symbol of the joy and relief felt by millions of Americans at the end of World War II.
