Thatcher was assigned to the crew of the B-25 bomber known as Ruptured Duck. He served as the tail gunner and engineer on the aircraft, and was responsible for maintaining the engines during the flight. On the day of the raid, Thatcher's aircraft along with 15 other bombers were launched from the USS Hornet, which was stationed in the Pacific Ocean. Despite being detected by the Japanese, the bombers successfully dropped their bombs on various targets in Tokyo. After the raid, Thatcher's plane ran out of fuel, and the crew was forced to bail out over China. Thatcher was injured during the landing, but managed to make it to safety with the help of Chinese civilians.

David Thatcher was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the Doolittle Raid. He continued to serve in the Army Air Forces until 1945, and was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant. After the war, he went to college under the GI Bill, and worked as a lineman for the Montana Power Company. In 2015, at the age of 94, he was one of the last surviving members of the Doolittle Raid. He passed away on June 22, 2016, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and service to his country.
