Richard Fleischer Autographs
Richard Fleischer was an American movie director, producer, and screenwriter, who was born on December 8, 1916, in Brooklyn, New York. He was renowned for directing big-budget films in the 1950s and 60s, such as "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," "Soylent Green," and "The Vikings." However, Fleischer's career began long before he became a director. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Signal Corps as a combat cameraman. Fleischer filmed the invasion of Normandy and witnessed the liberation of Paris, earning several military commendations, including the Bronze Star.
Richard Fleischer's military career began as a technician fifth grade for the US Army Signal Corps. He used his photographic and cinematography skills to document the war, and in 1944, he landed at Utah Beach in Normandy, where he filmed the first Allied landings on the continent. Fleischer also captured footage of the liberation of Paris, earning him a Meritorious Service Award for his contribution to the war effort. The experience left an indelible mark on him, which he carried through his life and work. In later interviews, Fleischer spoke of the horrors of war and the need for movies to depict the human cost of conflict.
Fleischer's service in the US Army Signal Corps gave him valuable experience in filmmaking, which he put to good use when the war ended. He worked for RKO pictures as a documentarian and then moved on to direct his first feature film, "Child of Divorce," in 1946. He went on to direct numerous movies, ranging from science fiction to documentaries, but always with the perspective that comes from having witnessed the atrocities of war firsthand. In his later years, he remained a strong proponent of peace and understanding, speaking out against nuclear arms and advocating for social change through his artwork. Richard Fleischer will always be remembered as a talented filmmaker, but his military career reminds us that his talents were for a greater good.
