During the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942, Vejtasa shot down three aircraft in a single flight. In the infamous Battle of Santa Cruz in 1942, Vejtasa, a seven-based fighter pilot, refused to retreat when faced with more than twenty Japanese aircraft. His famous 'thirty seconds over Tokyo' occurred when he destroyed five enemy planes in one mission. During that same battle, his fleet had to implement a withdrawal, but Vejtasa stayed behind and engaged the Japanese for over half an hour, providing his carrier time to get clear. His heroic actions essentially saved the USS Enterprise.

After his years of active military duty, Vejtasa remained in the service, rising to the rank of naval captain before retiring in 1963. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 94. Stanley Vejtasa was and remains a true American hero who made significant contributions to the United States Navy during his military career.
