John Gielgud Autographs
Sir John Gielgud, one of the most respected actors of the 20th century, had a career spanning nearly eight decades across stage, film, and television. Born in 1904 to a theatrical family, Gielgud began his acting career on the London stage in 1921. Despite his early success in theater, particularly in Shakespearean roles, he was initially reluctant to embrace film acting.
Gielgud's film career began to flourish in the 1950s and 1960s with notable performances in movies such as "Julius Caesar" (1953), "Richard III" (1955), and "Becket" (1964), for which he received an Oscar nomination. However, it was his role as the acerbic butler Hobson in the 1981 comedy "Arthur" that earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the age of 77.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Gielgud continued to appear in numerous films, including "Gandhi" (1982), "The Elephant Man" (1980), and "Shine" (1996). His final major film role was in Peter Greenaway's "Prospero's Books" (1991), an adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Gielgud's distinctive voice, impeccable diction, and commanding presence made him a sought-after actor in both classical and contemporary roles until his death in 2000 at the age of 96.
