Burns' baseball documentary, titled "Baseball," was a massive success and turned him into a household name. The nine-part series chronicled the history of baseball in the United States from its inception in the mid-1800s to the present-day. The documentary, which aired in 1994, was narrated by Burns and featured interviews with prominent baseball players, coaches, historians, and fans. It became one of PBS's most-watched programs and helped revive interest in the sport in the mid-1990s, which had been waning since the 1980s.

Burns continued to make documentaries on various subjects, but baseball remained his first love. He produced several other baseball films, such as "The Tenth Inning," "Jackie Robinson," and "The Curse of the Bambino."
