Lin-Manuel Miranda is a renowned composer, lyricist, playwright and actor of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. He was born on January 16, 1980, in New York City and grew up in a largely Puerto Rican neighborhood in Upper Manhattan. From a young age, Miranda possessed remarkable talent and passion for music and theater. He attended Hunter College Elementary School and later graduated from Hunter College High School, where he participated actively in several school musicals.
Miranda’s career in the entertainment industry began in 1999 when he joined a high school theater group, which was later named “Freestyle Love Supreme”. He then attended Wesleyan University, where he continued to pursue his passion for music and theater, and co-founded a hip-hop theater group called “In the Heights”. In 2007, the group produced the musical of the same name, which was written, composed and starred in by Miranda. The show was a smashing success, earning numerous accolades, including four Tony Awards, a Grammy Award, and several Drama Desk Awards.
Since then, Miranda has gone on to achieve even greater success in his career, becoming a household name and an inspiration to many in the industry. He is famously known for creating the musical masterpiece “Hamilton”, which tells the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton through hip-hop and R&B music. The show has won multiple awards, including 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and a Grammy. Miranda has received numerous other accolades for his exceptional contributions to the arts, including a MacArthur Fellowship and a Kennedy Center Honor. His work has brought a new level of diversity, representation, and inclusivity to storytelling in the entertainment industry, and his impact on the industry continues to inspire and influence emerging artists.
