Matt Johnson was a hockey enforcer who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 10 seasons. Born on November 16, 1974, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, he started playing hockey as a youth in the Edmonton Minor Hockey system. Johnson was a hard-working, tough-as-nails defenseman, known for his physical presence on the ice. His NHL career began in 1994 when he was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the fifth round of the NHL Entry Draft.
Johnson's imposing size, strength, and fighting skills made him a fan favorite, and a valuable asset to his team. He played for four different teams during his career, including the Stars, the Minnesota Wild, the Los Angeles Kings, and the Vancouver Canucks. Johnson was a tough enforcer who was not afraid to mix it up on the ice. In his 675 NHL games, he compiled 1,294 penalty minutes, showing he was a true enforcer who was willing to drop the gloves when necessary.
Johnson's career ended prematurely due to injuries. He missed the entire 2003-04 season due to a back injury, and retired from hockey in 2006 due to post-concussion syndrome. Despite his short career, Johnson was a fan favorite, and known as one of the toughest players in the league. His toughness and fearless play earned him the respect of his peers and cemented his legacy as one of the NHL's greatest enforcers.
