Mark Johnson, born on September 22, 1957, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a legendary figure in American ice hockey. He rose to prominence as a member of the "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Olympic team that won gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Johnson played a crucial role in the historic victory over the Soviet Union, scoring two pivotal goals in the 4-3 win.
Johnson's hockey career began at the University of Wisconsin, where he led the Badgers to an NCAA championship in 1977 and became the school's second all-time leading scorer with 256 points in just three seasons. Following his Olympic triumph, Johnson embarked on a successful 11-year NHL career, playing for teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota North Stars, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, and New Jersey Devils. Throughout his 669 NHL games, he accumulated 203 goals and 305 assists for a total of 508 points.
After retiring as a player, Johnson transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team from 1996 to 2002 before taking over as head coach of the women's team. Under his leadership, the women's team has achieved remarkable success, including multiple NCAA championships. Johnson's contributions to hockey have been widely recognized, leading to his induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 and his receipt of the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2011 for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.
