He was considered one of the best punters in college football, earning the title of First Team All-Big East in 2007 and First Team All-American in 2008. In 2009, he was drafted in the seventh round by the Indianapolis Colts.
McAfee played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2016. He quickly became one of the most recognizable players on the team, known for his strong leg and confident personality. He was primarily a punter, but also served as a kickoff specialist and occasionally kicked field goals. Throughout his career with the Colts, he was consistently ranked among the league leaders in key statistical categories. In 2016, he announced his retirement from football at the age of 29 to pursue a career in media.

He is a popular podcast host, with his show The Pat McAfee Show featuring a mix of sports commentary, comedy, and interviews with pro athletes and other influential figures.
