Born on February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman, lawyer, and president. He is regarded as one of the most influential leaders in the history of the United States because of his political career. Abraham Lincoln started his political career in 1832 as a Whig candidate for the Illinois State Legislature. He served in the state legislature from 1834 to 1842. In 1846, he won the election to the US House of Representatives where he opposed the Mexican-American War and called for the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. However, he lost his re-election campaign in 1848.
