Otto Kerner Autograph

Otto Kerner, Jr. was an American lawyer, judge, and politician, who was born on August 15, 1908, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the Northwestern University School of Law in 1930 and started practicing law in Chicago. Kerner was a member of the Democratic Party and got active in politics in the 1940s when he ran for Cook County State's Attorney. More about Otto Kerner

Kerner served as a judge on the Illinois Circuit Court and the Illinois Appellate Court from 1950 to 1961, when he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy appointed Kerner as Governor of Illinois, and he served in that capacity until 1968. As governor, Kerner is credited with several progressive policies, including the establishment of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and the construction of the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle Campus.

Kerner's political career, however, was overshadowed by his indictment and conviction on bribery and corruption charges in 1973. He was accused of accepting bribes in exchange for awarding state contracts to political allies. Kerner was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $50,000. Although he maintained his innocence, Kerner resigned his judgeship and withdrew from public life after his conviction. He passed away on May 9, 1976.
