Pearson initially made a name for himself driving for the legendary Holman-Moody racing team. His breakout year was 1968 when he won eight races, finished in the top five 36 times, and recorded 12 poles. That year marked the first of his three NASCAR Cup Series titles, which he also won in 1969 and 1970. Pearson continued to have success throughout the 1970s, winning the Daytona 500 in 1976 and earning runner-up finishes in the Cup Series all but one season from 1972 to 1977.

Despite retiring in 1986, Pearson's record still stands out in NASCAR history. His 105 wins are second only to Richard Petty, and his winning percentage - which factors in the total number of races he entered - is the best among drivers who raced in the Cup Series for more than one season. Pearson was also known for his humble demeanor and competitive nature on the track, and in 1990, he was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. Pearson passed away on November 12, 2018, at the age of 83.
