Glen Wood Autographs
Glen Wood was born on July 18, 1925, in Stuart, Virginia. He spent his entire life in the racing industry and began racing at the age of 16. He and his brother Leonard started their own business, Wood Brothers Racing, in 1950, which would become one of the most successful teams in NASCAR history. Glen was a part-time driver but primarily served as crew chief and engine builder for the team, which won 98 races and at least one race in each year from 1953-2011.
Wood's biggest accomplishments as a driver came in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He competed in NASCAR's top-level Grand National (now Cup Series) division and won four times, including the inaugural race at Bowman Gray Stadium in 1958. He also won a pair of races at Daytona International Speedway and was a top-10 finisher in the standings for five straight seasons from 1958-62. However, his impact on the sport as a crew chief and team owner was far more substantial. Wood won 15 Daytona 500s as a team owner or crew chief, including the 2011 edition with driver Trevor Bayne. He was also inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012.
Glen Wood's racing career spanned over six decades, and he was one of the most universally respected figures in the sport. He helped revolutionize pit stops in the 1960s with innovative techniques to quickly service cars and helped refine NASCAR's carburetor rules in the 1980s. His team's success, particularly at Daytona, cemented their place in NASCAR history, and Wood became one of the most beloved members of the community. He died on January 18, 2019, at the age of 93, but his legacy in racing lives on.
