Johnny Rutherford Autographs
Johnny Rutherford was born on March 12, 1938, in Coffeyville, Kansas, USA. He is a retired American racing driver who won three Indianapolis 500 races in 1974, 1976, and 1980. He competed in the Indianapolis 500 sixteen times and holds the record of leading the race in seven different years. He was one of the most successful drivers of his time, and his racing legacy is still considered to be one of the best in American history.
Rutherford drove for various teams in his racing career, but it was his partnership with McLaren that brought him the greatest success. In 1974, he won the Indy 500 for the first time driving a McLaren-Offy. He repeated the feat in 1976 with the same team, and then switched to Penske Racing to win his third Indy 500 in 1980. During his career, he also won 27 USAC Champ Car races, three Pocono 500 races, and two Texas world 600 races.
Rutherford retired from racing in 1994 after suffering a serious crash while testing a car at Texas World Speedway. After his retirement, he became a goodwill ambassador for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and played an integral role in the development of the Indy Racing League. He was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1996 and was honored with the prestigious Spirit of Ford Award in 2017. Johnny Rutherford's career was characterized by a fierce competitive spirit, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of racers.
