Terry Labonte is a former professional stock car racing driver who was born on November 16, 1956, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is considered as one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history, having won numerous races and championships in his illustrious career. Labonte started his racing career at the age of 15, competing in local events throughout Texas, and in 1978, he made his way to NASCAR's top division, the Cup Series.
In his Cup Series debut, Labonte finished 18th at Darlington Raceway, and went on to win his first race the following season at the Southern 500, becoming the youngest driver ever to win a Cup Series race at that time. He went on to win the Cup Series championship in 1984 and 1996 and earned a total of 22 Cup Series victories over the course of his career. Labonte also competed in the Xfinity Series where he won 11 races and the championship in 1986. Additionally, he was recognized for his achievements in the sport by being inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2016.
After retiring from racing full-time in 2014, Terry Labonte still stayed active in the sport, occasionally competing in short-track races and serving as a driver coach for young racers. Labonte was known for his smooth driving style and consistent performance, which earned him the nickname "Texas Terry". Throughout his career, he proved himself to be a true NASCAR legend, inspiring countless drivers who looked up to him as they made their way up the ranks.
