Alan Ball was born on May 12, 1945, in Farnworth, Lancashire, England. He started playing soccer at a young age and was spotted by a talent scout while playing for a local club. In 1962, at the age of 17, he signed his first professional contract with Blackpool. Ball quickly established himself as a talented midfielder with superb ball control and vision. He made over 150 appearances for Blackpool, helping them win the Football League Cup in 1971.
In 1966, Ball became the youngest member of England's World Cup-winning squad. He played a key role in the final against West Germany, setting up Geoff Hurst's second goal and playing a vital part in the buildup to the famous third goal. Ball's tireless work rate and skill in midfield earned him the nickname 'The Mighty Atom'. Ball played for a number of other clubs during his career, including Everton, Arsenal, and Southampton. He also had a brief stint in the United States, playing for the Philadelphia Fury in the late 1970s. In total, Ball made over 700 professional appearances and scored 145 goals.
After retiring as a player, Ball went into coaching and management, taking charge of clubs such as Portsmouth, Manchester City, and Southampton. He also had a successful stint as manager of the England under-21 team. Ball's legacy in soccer is significant, and he is remembered as one of England's finest midfielders. His tireless work rate, superb ball control, and vision helped him to achieve great success both domestically and internationally.
