Bert Trautmann Autograph

Bert Trautmann was a legendary German goalkeeper who was well known for his remarkable success in football. Born in Wuppertal, Germany in 1923, Trautmann was into football from a very young age. During World War II, he joined the German army and was captured by the British. Following his capture, Trautmann was sent to a prisoner of war camp in Manchester, England. It was here that he began playing football with fellow prisoners and word of his skills soon reached the coach of St Helens Town, Jack Friar, who offered him a place in the team. In 1949, Manchester City’s manager, Jock Thomson, signed Trautmann, and he joined the club as a goalkeeper. Despite criticism from the media and some of the fans over his German origin, Trautmann was determined to prove his worth. He quickly became a vital member of the team, making crucial saves that earned him the nickname “The Cat”. Over the years, Trautmann played for Manchester City in over 500 matches, and his skills were instrumental in helping the team win their first major trophy, the FA Cup in 1956. Trautmann also became the first German to play in an FA Cup final, where he played through most of the game with a broken neck and helped Manchester City lift the trophy.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sport, Bert Trautmann was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2004. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 89, but his memory and legacy live on. Trautmann will always be remembered as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and his story is a testament to the power of determination, courage, and perseverance.
