Gary Sprake Autographs

Gary Sprake was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper during the 1960s and 1970s. Born on 3 June 1945, in Swansea, Wales, Sprake started his football career with the local club, Swansea Town (later Swansea City) and made his debut in the 1962-63 season. He played a total of 202 games for Swansea City till 1967, earning a reputation as one of the best young goalkeepers in the country. Sprake's outstanding performances in the lower division earned him a move to the top-flight club, Leeds United in June 1967, where he spent the majority of his footballing career.
After joining Leeds United, Sprake soon established his place as the club's first-choice goalkeeper, playing a total of 512 games for the club in all competitions. He played a vital role in Leeds United's success in the 1960s and 1970s, which included the team winning English First Division title twice (1968-69 and 1973-74) and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968 and 1971. In addition to domestic and European success, Sprake also represented Wales at international level, winning 37 caps for his country between 1963 and 1975.
Despite his impressive footballing career, Gary Sprake's career came under scrutiny after one of the most infamous moments in football history. During a match against Liverpool in 1967, Sprake threw the ball into his own net while attempting to throw the ball to one of his teammates. The incident, which became known as the "Sprake howler," remains a part of football folklore to this day. Despite this, Gary remained an iconic figure in both Swansea and Leeds United's history and is remembered as one of the finest goalkeepers of his era. Sprake passed away on 19 October 2016, and his legacy and contribution to football remain remarkable to this day.
