He began his soccer career with Manchester United, signing with the English Premier League team in 1998 when he was just 17 years old. O'Shea's versatility as a player allowed him to play in several positions, including central defense, central midfield, full-back, and even as a goalkeeper on one occasion. He was known for his excellent game sense, bravery, and ability to score crucial goals. During his time at Manchester United, he scored a total of 15 goals in 393 appearances, making him one of the most reliable players in the squad.

O’Shea represented Ireland at the international level with 118 signs. He also played for Sunderland, Reading, and briefly for the Irish team Waterford United before retiring in 2019. After retiring, O'Shea joined as a coach at Reading where he spent a season before moving to join the coaching staff at Manchester United.
