Josef Martinez is a Venezuelan professional soccer player who currently plays as a striker for the Major League Soccer (MLS) club Atlanta United. Born in Venezuela in 1993, Martinez started his soccer career at a young age playing for the Valencia football academy. He progressed through the ranks and made his professional debut in 2010 for Caracas FC in the Venezuelan Primera Division. In 2013, he moved to Swiss club Young Boys where he scored 20 goals in 47 appearances over two seasons. In 2016, he joined Italian club Torino on loan and scored five goals in 13 appearances.
In 2017, Martinez joined Atlanta United in their debut season in MLS. He had a sensational campaign, scoring 19 goals in 20 appearances and was named the league's MVP. The following season, he broke the MLS record for most goals in a single season with 31 goals in 34 appearances, winning the Golden Boot and MVP awards for the second consecutive year. He continued his impressive form in the 2019 season despite missing several games due to injury, scoring an impressive 27 goals in 29 appearances.
Martinez has also been a key player for the Venezuelan national team, having made his debut in 2011. He has scored 12 goals in 52 appearances for his country and participated in the 2015 and 2019 Copa America tournaments. Martinez is known for his explosive pace, clinical finishing, and celebration dance moves which have become somewhat of a trademark for the 28-year-old striker. He is widely considered as one of the league's most exciting and talented players and is expected to continue his dominance in the coming years.
