He was born on April 11, 1991, in San Pietro Vernotico, Italy, to Brazilian father Mazinho, who played for Brazil's 1994 World Cup-winning team, and Spanish mother Valéria Alcántara. Thiago began his soccer career at the youth academy of Barcelona in 2005 and quickly rose through the ranks to make his first-team debut in 2009.
