Zinedine Zidane is a legendary French footballer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Born in Marseille in 1972, Zidane grew up in poverty and began playing football on the streets. He joined a local club, SO Septèmes-les-Vallons, at a young age and quickly caught the attention of scouts from bigger clubs. He joined Cannes in 1989 before moving to Bordeaux in 1992 where he helped the club win the UEFA Intertoto Cup. In 1996, Zidane moved to Italy to play for Juventus where he won two Serie A titles, as well as the Intercontinental Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
Zidane's greatest achievements came with the French national team. He won the 1998 World Cup on home soil where he scored two goals in the final against Brazil. He also helped France win the 2000 UEFA European Championship, scoring a penalty in the final against Italy. Zidane was named the player of the tournament and cemented his place as one of the greats of the game. Zidane retired from international football after the 2006 World Cup, during which he was infamously sent off in the final against Italy for headbutting Marco Materazzi.
After retiring from playing, Zidane moved into coaching and took charge of Real Madrid's reserve team, Castilla. He later became the first-team coach and led the club to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018. Zidane has also won two La Liga titles and two FIFA Club World Cups with Real Madrid. He is widely regarded as a master tactician and has developed a reputation for making astute substitutions and tactical adjustments during matches.
