Barbara Morgan Autographs

Barbara Morgan is an American educator and former NASA astronaut who made a significant contribution to space exploration. Born on November 28, 1951, in Fresno, California, Morgan was fascinated by space from an early age. As a child, she watched Alan Shepard's Mercury flight on television and developed a keen interest in astronomy. Morgan pursued her studies in math and science at Stanford University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in human biology in 1973. She went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in curriculum and instruction from the same university and became a teacher.
In 1985, Morgan was selected by NASA as a backup candidate for the Teacher in Space program, which aimed to send an educator on a shuttle mission to inspire young students in science and technology. Tragically, the mission's primary candidate, Christa McAuliffe, and six other crew members died in the Challenger disaster in January 1986. Morgan continued to honor McAuliffe's legacy and dedicated her career to promoting STEM education. In 1998, Morgan was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate and completed her training in 2000. In August 2007, she flew on the STS-118 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour as a mission specialist, becoming the first educator astronaut to reach space.
Morgan's space career was not limited to her single mission to space. She trained as both a shuttle operator and a robotics operator and served as a capsule communicator (CAPCOM) for several shuttle missions. After her retirement from NASA in 2008, Morgan returned to teaching and worked as a distinguished educator in residence at Boise State University in Idaho. In recognition of her contributions to education and space exploration, Morgan has received numerous awards, including the National Science Board's Public Service Award and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. Her life serves as an inspiration to future generations of educators and astronauts.
