Bjarni Tryggvason Autographs
Bjarni Tryggvason was born on September 21, 1945, in Reykjavík, Iceland. He attended school in Canada, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in engineering physics from the University of British Columbia in 1968. He later continued his education at the California Institute of Technology, where he earned his doctorate in engineering science. He then went on to work at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
Bjarni Tryggvason's space career began in 1983 when he was selected to be one of the first six Canadian astronauts. He was a part of the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-85 mission in August 1997. During the mission, he conducted experiments on the effects of gravity on fluid dynamics, which are now being used in research into diseases such as Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's, and osteoporosis. He retired from the CSA in 2008 but continued to stay active in the space industry through various organizations and initiatives dedicated to advancing space exploration and science.
Throughout his career, Bjarni Tryggvason has received numerous awards and honours for his contributions to the field of space exploration. Most notably, he was inducted into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001, and awarded the Order of Canada in 2015. He remains a respected and influential figure in the space industry, recognized for his dedication to promoting scientific research and exploration beyond Earth.
