Bob Cardenas is a retired United States Air Force Colonel, who served his country for over three decades. Born on September 15, 1920, in Inglewood, California, he began his military career at age 18 when he joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1938. During his time in the military, Cardenas made significant contributions to aviation, including piloting the legendary supersonic jet bomber B-58 and co-piloting the B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki during World War II. During his long military career, Cardenas flew over 50 types of aircraft, amassing a total of 14,000+ flight hours. He also broke several records, such as flying a B-36 nuclear bomber nonstop from Alaska to Texas in 27 hours, and piloting the first B-52 Stratofortress to circle the globe non-stop in 1962. He was also instrumental in the development of the B-58 Hustler supersonic jet bomber and served as its lead test pilot during its initial flights.
Cardenas's achievements in the military earned him numerous awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Bronze Star. He retired from the Air Force in 1973 as a colonel, and later worked for the Aerospace Corporation and Northrop Grumman. Today, Cardenas is regarded as one of the most accomplished test pilots and aviation legends in American history, and his contributions to military aviation will always be remembered.
