Bob Crippen Autographs
Bob Crippen is an American engineer and retired astronaut who was born on September 11, 1937, in Beaumont, Texas. He studied Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. From there, he went on to join the United States Navy, where he served as a pilot until 1977. During his time in the navy, Crippen flew over 150 different models of aircraft and logged over 6,500 flying hours.
Crippen's most significant contribution to space exploration was his role as the pilot of the first Space Shuttle mission, STS-1, on April 12, 1981. The Space Shuttle Columbia was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, making Crippen and his commander, John W. Young, the first humans to fly the Shuttle into space. This mission was a major milestone in the history of space exploration, marking the beginning of a new era of spaceflight that focused on the development of reusable spacecraft. Crippen went on to have three more Shuttle missions, including STS-7, where he became the first astronaut to fly onboard the Space Shuttle for a second time.
In 1986, following his spaceflight career, Crippen became Director of the Space Shuttle Program at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. In this role, he oversaw the design, testing, and operation of new spacecraft that included the Shuttle, Space Station Freedom, and the X-38 Crew Return Vehicle. Crippen continued to work for NASA throughout the 1990s, serving as Associate Administrator for the Space Shuttle Program and then Deputy Director of the Johnson Space Center. Since his retirement from NASA in 2001, he has worked as an aviation and space industry consultant and as a member of several government committees focused on scientific research and technology.
