Bob Overmyer Autographs
Bob Overmyer was born on July 14th, 1936 in Lorain, Ohio. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1954 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Baldwin Wallace College in 1958. In 1960, he received a commission in the United States Marine Corps and went on to serve as a pilot in Vietnam. He earned several medals and then pursued a Master of Science in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California in 1968.
Overmyer’s space career began when he was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1969. He served as a pilot on two missions, STS-5 in November 1982 and STS-51-B in April 1985. During his time with NASA, he was responsible for testing the space shuttle’s Remote Manipulator System, or the “Canadarm,” which became integral to many future space missions. Overmyer was known for his excellent flying skills and his calm demeanor during missions. He ended his career at NASA with over 211 hours in space.
After retiring from NASA, Overmyer returned to Ohio and became an executive in the aerospace industry. He also served as a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol, teaching aviation and aerospace classes to young people. Bob Overmyer passed away on March 22, 1996, but his legacy as a skilled astronaut and dedicated engineer lives on. His contributions to the space program and the development of the Canadarm have made a lasting impact on space exploration today.
