Charles Conrad Autographs
Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr. was an American astronaut and naval officer who achieved great success in the United States space program. Born on June 2, 1930, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Conrad's love for aviation and space began when he was a young boy. After graduating from Princeton University, he joined the United States Navy and quickly became a test pilot, eventually flying dangerous missions in supersonic planes.
Conrad was one of the pioneers of the American space program and was one of only twelve people to have walked on the moon. In 1962 he was selected to be part of NASA's second astronaut group, and he flew on four space missions, including two of the six manned moon landings. He was the pilot of Gemini 5, which set a new space endurance record of eight days, and commander of Apollo 12, the second manned moon landing. Conrad remains one of the few humans to have walked on the moon, and his contributions to space exploration have been significant.
Throughout his career, Conrad received numerous awards and honors, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He retired from NASA and the Navy in 1973 and went on to work in the private sector. Conrad tragically died on July 8, 1999, while on a rain-soaked motorcycle ride in California. Despite his untimely death, his legacy in the space industry continues to inspire and motivate future generations of astronauts and space enthusiasts.
