Charlie Duke Autographs
Charlie Duke is a former astronaut and engineer who is best known for being the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 16 mission, where he became the tenth person to walk on the moon. Born on October 3, 1935, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Duke has had a long and distinguished career in the space industry.
Duke began his career as an Air Force pilot in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After completing his stint in the military, he joined NASA in 1966 and was selected to be an astronaut in the fifth group of astronauts that NASA had ever chosen. Two years later, he was serving as the backup lunar module pilot for the Apollo 13 mission. When the planned lunar landing was aborted due to a malfunction, Duke and his crewmates were thrust into the spotlight, as their mission became a rescue mission instead of a moonwalk.
In 1972, Duke finally got his chance to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 16 mission. During his time on the lunar surface, he collected over 200 pounds of rock samples and conducted a series of experiments that helped scientists gain a better understanding of the moon's geology. Duke went on to work for NASA for several more years, serving as the deputy chief of the astronaut office and helping to develop the Space Shuttle program. Today, he is retired from NASA but remains an active speaker and consultant on space-related topics.
