Chuck Yeager Autographs

Chuck Yeager was a legendary American test pilot and United States Air Force officer who made history as the first person to break the sound barrier in level flight. Born in 1923 in Myra, West Virginia, Yeager enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1941 and quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot during World War II. He flew 64 combat missions over Europe, shooting down 13 German aircraft and earning ace status. After being shot down over France in 1944, he evaded capture with the help of the French Resistance and returned to combat, an exceptional feat that required special permission from General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Following World War II, Yeager became a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California. On October 14, 1947, he piloted the Bell X-1 rocket plane and became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound, reaching Mach 1.06 (700 mph) at an altitude of 43,000 feet. This historic achievement, which many believed impossible at the time, ushered in the era of supersonic flight and earned Yeager widespread recognition, including the Collier and Mackay trophies. He continued pushing the boundaries of aviation, becoming the first person to fly at twice the speed of sound in 1953.
Throughout his illustrious career, Yeager held various command positions in the Air Force, including commandant of the Aerospace Research Pilot School, where he trained many future astronauts. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, flying 127 combat missions during the latter. Yeager retired from the Air Force in 1975 with the rank of brigadier general, having logged more than 10,000 hours of flight time in over 360 different aircraft types. His extraordinary achievements in aviation and his larger-than-life persona made him an American icon, inspiring generations of pilots and earning him numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985.
