Daniel Brandenstein Autographs
Daniel Brandenstein was born on January 17th, 1943, in Watertown, Wisconsin, United States. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics in 1965. With this academic background, Brandenstein joined the United States Navy, where he attended the Navy Fighter Weapons School, also known as TOPGUN, and became a certified pilot. In May 1970, he was selected for the NASA astronaut program, where he would become one of the few astronauts to fly Shuttle missions in the 1980s and 90s.
Brandenstein had an impressive space career, spanning from 1983 to 1992. He served as pilot of the STS-8 mission in August 1983, where he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. During his mission, he became the first flight to fly without a payload specialist, meaning that the shuttle carried only active NASA astronauts. Brandenstein then commanded STS-51-G, STS-32 and STS-49, missions whose tasks involved deploying or retrieving communication satellites, conducting scientific experiments, and repairing or repositioning satellites malfunctioning in orbit. STS-49 would mark his last mission in space, where he helped conduct the first maintenance of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Apart from his roles as pilot or commander, Brandenstein also served as NASA's chief of the Astronaut Office from 1987 to 1992. In this capacity, he was responsible for developing astronaut training programs, selecting crews for various missions, and overseeing human spaceflight operations. He retired from NASA in 1992 after a decorated career, having accumulated over 793 hours in space and having made significant contributions to NASA's mission. Brandenstein later became a member of the board of directors at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and received several honors and awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal.
