Dick Covey Autographs
Dick Covey was a highly accomplished astronaut and spaceflight specialist who made significant contributions to NASA's space program. Born on August 1st, 1946 in Michigan, Covey grew up fascinated by space and technology. After completing his engineering degree at the United States Air Force Academy in 1968, he served in the Air Force for several years before joining NASA as an astronaut.
Covey's first space mission was in 1985, when he served as the pilot on the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger's STS-51I mission. He went on to fly three more Space Shuttle missions including the STS-26 "Return to Flight" mission in 1988, which marked the first mission after the tragic Challenger disaster. During his career, Covey logged over 616 hours in space and traveled a distance of more than 25.5 million miles.
In addition to his work as an astronaut, Covey was instrumental in the development and management of NASA's space program. He served as the deputy director for the Johnson Space Center and led several missions critical to the development of the International Space Station. His strong leadership and technical expertise earned him numerous awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
