Eugene Cernan Autographs
Eugene Cernan, born in March 1934, was an American astronaut and naval aviator. He was renowned as the last man to step off the moon, having been a part of the Apollo 17 mission. Cernan's astronaut career began in 1963 when he was selected as a member of NASA's third astronaut group.
Cernan's first spaceflight was in 1966 when he piloted Gemini 9A alongside astronaut Tom Stafford. During this mission, Cernan became the second American to perform an extravehicular activity (EVA) in space. Following that, Cernan was the lunar module pilot during his second flight in the Apollo 10 mission in 1969. He orbited the moon and descended to within 47,000 feet of the moon's surface, setting a record for human beings' closest approach.
Cernan's final flight saw him make history as the last man to leave the surface of the moon on December 14, 1972. While on the moon, he and his Apollo 17 crewmate, Dr. Jack Schmitt, carried out three lunar EVA trips. The duo conducted extensive scientific experiments and set several records that had yet to be broken. Cernan retired from NASA and the Navy in 1976, holding the rank of captain in the United States Navy. He was a spokesperson for space exploration and served as a television commentator for space shuttle missions in the 1980s. Eugene Cernan will always be remembered as a remarkable astronaut who was a pioneer in the exploration of space.
