Gene Kranz Autographs

Gene Kranz is a former NASA flight director and engineer who worked on several of the agency's most notable missions, namely the Apollo 11 moon landing and the Apollo 13 mission. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1933, and went on to earn a degree in aeronautical engineering from Park College in Missouri. Kranz began his career with the US Air Force before joining NASA in 1960, where he would go on to become one of the most respected and admired figures in the agency's history.
Kranz's work on the Apollo 11 mission, which saw Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans to set foot on the moon, is perhaps his most famous achievement. He was the flight director in charge of the "White Team," which was responsible for the lunar landing. His calm and steady leadership helped guide the mission to a successful conclusion, despite several technical glitches and a number of high-stress moments. Kranz later earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work, recognizing the vital role he and his team played in one of the most important moments in American history.
Kranz's expertise and leadership were again put to the test during the Apollo 13 mission, when an explosion on the spacecraft threatened the lives of the three astronauts on board. Kranz was the lead flight director during the crisis, and thanks to his and his team's quick thinking and problem solving, the crew was able to make it back to Earth safely. Kranz's famous phrase "Failure is not an option" became associated with the mission, reflecting the determination and can-do attitude that guided his work throughout his career. Today, Kranz is revered as one of NASA's most legendary figures, and his contributions to the space agency and its missions continue to inspire and awe people around the world.
