George Zamka Autographs
George Zamka is a retired NASA astronaut with a vast and impressive space career. He was born on June 29, 1962, in Jersey City, New Jersey, and went on to attend the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Later, he completed his Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from Catholic University of America.
Zamka served as a pilot and officer for the United States Marine Corps, flying F/A-18 fighter jets during the First Gulf War. In 1996, he was selected to join NASA's Astronaut Corps and began his journey to space. Over the course of his career, he logged over 692 hours in space and flew in two shuttle missions: STS-120 Discovery and STS-130 Endeavour. As a mission specialist on the STS-120 mission in 2007, Zamka helped install the Harmony module onto the International Space Station, which connected Columbus, the station's laboratory module, with future modules. On his second mission, STS-130, he served as the commander of Endeavour, which delivered Tranquility, a module that housed life support systems and a viewing cupola, to the International Space Station. Zamka retired from NASA and the military in 2013, ending a distinguished 26-year career.
Throughout his career, Zamka was known for his exceptional leadership, dedication, and technical expertise. He earned numerous awards and recognitions, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the NASA Space Flight Medal. Today, George Zamka remains an inspiration to aspiring space explorers, and his contributions to space exploration will not be forgotten.
