Gerhard Thiele Autograph

Gerhard Thiele is a German astronaut who was born on September 2, 1953, in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Germany. He earned his undergraduate engineering degree in Aachen and went on to receive a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Thiele began his space career as a member of the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1987, serving as a technical officer for the Columbus program. Thiele has flown two successful space missions: one as a crew member of the Space Shuttle mission STS-99 in 2000 and another as a crew member of Expedition 10 to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2005. During his 11-day Space Shuttle mission, Thiele helped to collect precise topographical data of the Earth using the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, and he also helped with the assembly and maintenance of the ISS during his six-month stay on the space station. Thiele has completed a total of 186 days in space, and he retired from the ESA in 2012 after a successful 25-year career.

Beyond his astronaut career, Thiele is also known for his contributions to the artificial intelligence community. In the late 1980s, he founded the European Institute for Cognitive Sciences and Engineering, which specialized in the study of cognitive science and human-machine interaction. Additionally, he served as a visiting professor at various universities across Germany, where he focused on the development of intelligent systems for various applications, including robotics and automation.
