After graduation, Harris joined NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, as a flight control engineer. During his stint at the center, Harris worked on several missions including the historic Apollo Moon landing program. He was later selected as an astronaut and went on to make his first spaceflight as a member of the STS-55 crew on the German Spacelab mission in April 1993. Harris went on to complete two more spaceflights, accumulating over 438 hours in space.

Following his retirement from NASA in 1998, Harris continued to work in the aerospace industry. He served on the board of directors for several space technology companies and was involved in the development of new spacecraft and propulsion technologies. An advocate for space exploration and research, Harris has inspired many students to pursue careers in the aerospace industry, leaving a lasting impact on the field.
