Joan Higginbotham is an accomplished mechanical engineer and NASA astronaut. She was born on August 3, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois. Higginbotham grew up with a strong passion for science and technology, which led her to pursue her education in engineering. She graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a degree in electrical engineering and a minor in industrial engineering. In 1996, Higginbotham began her career at NASA as a payload electrical engineer. She worked on various space shuttle missions, including STS-126, where she served as the mission specialist. Over the course of her career, Higginbotham logged over 308 hours in space, traveling approximately 12.8 million miles. She was the third African American woman to travel to space and the first to work on the International Space Station. Higginbotham also made significant contributions to the development of NASA's Constellation Program, which aimed to take humans back to the moon and beyond.
In addition to her remarkable work with NASA, Higginbotham is also an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the STEM fields. She frequently speaks at schools and organizations to inspire young people, particularly women and minorities, to pursue careers in STEM.
