John Blaha Autographs
John Blaha was born on August 26, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas, and spent his childhood in Northfield, Minnesota. In his early years, he developed an interest in flying and joined the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) during his university years. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Air Force Academy in 1965, and later earned a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University.
Blaha was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1980 and flew his first space mission in 1989, serving as a mission specialist on the STS-61-A Space Shuttle Atlantis. He went on to participate in three more space flights, including a 118-day mission aboard the Russian space station Mir in 1996. During his time aboard Mir, Blaha conducted various scientific experiments, performed space walks, and collaborated closely with Russian cosmonauts.
In addition to his space career, Blaha served in the United States Air Force for over 30 years, retiring as a colonel in 1998. He received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. After his retirement from the Air Force, Blaha continued his work with NASA as a consultant and advocate for space exploration.
