John Herrington Autographs
John Herrington is a former NASA astronaut who made history by becoming the first Native American to travel to space. Born on September 14, 1958, in Wetumka, Oklahoma, Herrington grew up in Colorado and later attended the University of Colorado where he earned a degree in Applied Mathematics. He then joined the U.S. Navy and trained to become a test pilot. In 1996, Herrington was selected as a NASA astronaut and completed his first spaceflight in 2002.
During his space career, Herrington completed a total of three spaceflights, spending over 13 days in space. His first spaceflight was aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour as part of the crew for mission STS-113, where he helped install the P1 truss segment on the International Space Station. His second mission, STS-115, was also aboard Endeavour and focused on delivering and installing components for the space station. Herrington’s final mission, STS-123, was aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour and involved the delivery and assembly of the first segment of the Japanese Kibo laboratory to the ISS.
In addition to his remarkable achievements in space, Herrington has also been a strong advocate for science education, particularly for Native American youth. He founded the nonprofit organization Speaking Adventure, which focuses on using technology and adventure to engage Native American students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Today, Herrington continues to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals and is recognized as a role model and trailblazer in the Native American community.
