In 1996, John Phillips was selected by NASA as a mission specialist and later flew on three Space Shuttle missions. In 2003, he was a member of the STS-107 crew, which tragically lost their lives when the Columbia Space Shuttle disintegrated on re-entry. After the disaster, Phillips continued working at NASA and went on to serve as a Mission Specialist on the STS-113 and STS-119 missions. He also spent close to 180 days aboard the International Space Station as an Expedition 11 astronaut, where he conducted scientific experiments, participated in spacewalks, and supported the construction of the station.

In recognition of his contribution to space exploration, John Phillips has been awarded numerous honors, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, a Distinguished Flying Cross, and two NASA Distinguished Service Medals. In 2013, he retired from NASA after more than 20 years of service, during which he helped to advance our understanding of the universe and pave the way for future generations of astronauts to explore beyond Earth.
