He was born on April 15, 1951, in Long Beach, California, and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the United States Naval Academy in 1972. In 1996, John Phillips was selected by NASA as a mission specialist and later flew on three Space Shuttle missions. In 2003, he was a member of the STS-107 crew, which tragically lost their lives when the Columbia Space Shuttle disintegrated on re-entry. After the disaster, Phillips continued working at NASA and went on to serve as a Mission Specialist on the STS-113 and STS-119 missions.
